Books by Alex Brown

Stories are doorways to other worlds. That much is true—and there are many different stories and doorways through which you can walk on this website. Some doors take you to tales of myth and magic; others to stories of love and loss; friendship and bravery; imagination and creativity; search and discovery. Some of the doorways lead to worlds that are frightening—full of monsters and darkness. Others are comforting—full of warmth and kindness.

The many doors stand before you, Dear Reader. Pull up a chair and get cozy. Adventure awaits…

The Rainbow Thief

(This one leads to a rainbow heist. And a friendship.)

If it’s true that stories are portals to other worlds, then consider this your official invitation to step across the threshold into the world of Valenoth! The Rainbow Thief is a whimsical, standalone tale of brave and clever children, great and terrible wizards, the power of friendship (and magic), and the absolute chaos that ensues when an evil wizard steals from a leprechaun named Niall.

A House Named Haven

(The Tale of Rose and Ed: Book One)

Dear Reader, if you want to read a heartwarming story about two clever and kind children visiting their dear, old grandfather, exploring a seemingly enchanted forest, and wandering through a house full of secrets and stories, I urge you to look elsewhere.

While such story elements are found within this book, that is not all you will find—and not all of it will be to your liking. There are sinister plots, cruel intentions, betrayals of trust, and devastating heartbreak as well. If you still insist on reading this story, consider yourself warned, Dear Reader…

A House Named Haven follows two clever siblings, Rose and Ed, who love reading books and hearing stories about dastardly villains and triumphant heroes. Little do they know, they’re about to be right in the middle of one of those stories themselves…

The Storytellers

(The Tale of Rose and Ed: Book Two)

Dear Reader, if a trilogy of books about two clever and kind siblings and their misadventures were to be compared to a theatrical performance, this story would be the second act.

Following the tragically unfortunate events that occurred near the end of A House Named Haven, Rose and Ed Bode are right where we left them, holding hands in their darkened, empty home with dirty, tear-streaked faces. They’re filled with numerous, burning questions all demanding answers. Questions like: Where were their parents? Why had they been lied to? Would the Drifter find them again? Who was “Pattos,” and why should they be wary of them?

Whether any of those questions will be answered in this book remains to be seen.

You’ve now reached the second part of this tragic tale, Dear Reader. The lights are all dimmed and the curtain is drawn closed. The second act is about to begin…

The Knight Who Remembered

(The Tale of Rose and Ed: Book Three)

Dear Reader,

If you are looking for an ending to a quite tragic tale, you will find it here. But what sort of ending will it be?

I’ve thoroughly investigated the lives of Rose and Ed Bode, and what really happened to them and their parents, to The Storytellers and PATTOS, all those years ago. I’ve shared my findings with you throughout the past two installments of this strange and twisted tale. I promised to finish what I started, no matter what my research might unearth. I’ve uncovered dark and malevolent mysteries, yes, but I’ve also discovered great deeds of bravery, friendship, and love. By the final page, this story deserves to meet its true and proper end. You are here for that story, and I’ve delayed its ending long enough.

Come, now. Listen to the final pages of The Tale of Rose and Ed.

A Cobbler’s Tale

This isn’t your typical fantasy story. Then again, the protagonist isn’t your typical fantasy hero. He’s a cobbler.

Minz is a world of magic and mystery; a world of secrets and of stories. I will tell them—if you will listen.

Many, many years ago, in the small town of Harbor’s Port on the distant coast of the Serpent Sea, trouble brewed like a strong cup of coffee. (And not the good kind.) Specifically, trouble brewed for a certain fellow named Bill—who happened to be a cobbler by trade. Like most protagonists at their story’s start, Bill had no idea what sort of trouble was headed his way. And why would he? He was a cobbler. He hadn’t done anything even remotely heroic in his forty-three years of life. Granted, as a child, he wanted to grow up to be a valiant hero, but he quickly abandoned those dreams to pursue a good and sensible career with better health insurance.

Perhaps, against all odds, this would be Bill’s chance to take hold of those forgotten dreams and become the hero he once wanted to be.

A Lamplighter’s Tale

Minz can be a dark and terrible place, filled with terrifying monsters. Come closer, Dear Reader. Let me tell you a story about light and the brave people who keep the darkness and monsters at bay.

Ten-year-old Matt wants nothing more than to become a lamplighter, just like his Grandpa Hal. In his mind, lamplighters have the noblest of trades. They protect people from Vendradooks and other monsters that lurk about in the deep, dark night. At least… that’s what Matt has always thought. But when he and his Grandpa Hal travel to the town of Sephar, they land in hot water with an irate government official who thinks all lamplighters are charlatans and fearmongers. Matt’s beliefs are called into question, and he must discover the truth once and for all—before it’s too late.

Do Vendradooks really exist? Or has Matt’s entire life been a lie?

A Librarian’s Tale

This third installment in the Tales of Minz series covers the exciting adventures of a librarian, a wandering knight, and his noble squire…

Lynda has lived her whole life in the Library of Reldare. She wants nothing more than to find a cozy corner where she can avoid people, read a good book, and stay there. She has no desire whatsoever to go off on exciting adventures.

But Lynda wouldn’t be much of a protagonist, and this wouldn’t be much of a story, if she got what she wanted. One unexpected thing leads to another, and Lynda is banished from the library and forced to venture forth on an impossible quest if she ever wants to return. Through her travels, Lynda soon realizes that if she wants to save her family, the Library of Reldare, and the world of Minz itself from certain doom, she’ll have to use all of her kindness, courage, and cleverness to fulfill her quest and return home safely.

But will that be enough?

A Gardener’s Tale

A troubled youth. An overworked shopkeeper. An ancient, mythical being. A misguided highwayman. A desperate baker. A disillusioned soldier. An uncertain, magically created creature. An antisocial herbalist.

At first glance, these eight individuals have absolutely nothing in common, nothing with which to weave their stories together. But in the magical land of Minz, storythreads are often woven together with the most unlikely of elements.

Dear Reader, find out what happens when a world-weary knight, who, at times, wants nothing more than to be a gardener, and his companion, a semi-sentient chicken, go on a dangerous quest to find a rare and magical flower. Meet the dear friends and fearsome foes they encounter on their travels home. See how their stories are all connected with an unlikely, unifying thread.

This, the fourth book in the Tales of Minz series, is A Gardener’s Tale.
